We are nearing Valentines day and there is so many reasons to brush this holiday aside and call it a “hallmark holiday” but to me there are so many more reasons to take all the love we have in our hearts paired with all of the inspiration around us and make this year different! I was inspired by a very touching, creative project that Oh Penelope Photography did that you can see here. I am in no way trying to copy her but I was very inspired to do a similar project for a very deserving Hero and his family. Most of this post will be the words of this amazing couple and their sacrifice for our country. The images are a gift from Kristina for her husband Doug for Valentines Day. Here is their story, meet Doug and Kristina…
Hero (he·ro) a man of distinguished courage or ability, admired for his brave deeds and noble qualities.
I call him sugarbee and he calls me baby doll.
Words that describe my husband – My hero, strong, brave, reserved, loving, father, husband, solider, honor, smart, funny, caring, determination, commitment, moral, sense of duty and love of country, patriotic….

I adore my husband, he is absolutely amazing, wonderful, always makes me laugh, we are 2 peas in a pod, always thinking alike, he can be adorable at times, a pain in the butt at others, his smile and his eyes light up my heart, he has my all, my world, my heart my mind body and soul… he is my soulmate the love of my life

Douglas joined the army because it was in his blood and it was something he always wanted to do.

Doug: “I picked the infantry because I wanna be the one who actually made a difference…”

“The Honor guard was good for me at first..I was close to family plus I was honoring those who came before me and died for their country but even then it wore away any emotion I could have ever felt because I grew unable to feel any kind of pain when someone died. 4 funerals a day, 5 days a week for 4 years.”

“I was on full honors firing party for delta company, they sent me to the tomb of the unknown soldier then they sent me to honor guard company where I was full honors firing party again and did high visibility “missions” for the president and other foreign dignitaries..from there they sent me to caisson where I went through a 10 week training cycle on basic horsemanship and equestrianism…barrel racing, jumping..everything you can do on a horse pretty much passed that and got on a caisson team I earned my spurs right before I reenlisted to come to Ft. Lewis”

The honor guard is a selection of the best of the best that the US Military has to offer… only the finest sharpest soldiers are selected to do this job
Doug has guarded the tomb of the unknown soldier, performed his duty in funerals for President Ford and President Reagan.
Doug has served in Iraq and now Afghanistan, he has been in for 9 years and plans to retire in the Army. Thank you Doug and Kristina for your service to our country and thank you for sharing your story with us!!
